The New Longines Flagship Heritage Moonphase
Longines’ newest 2023 offering is an updated version of their existing Flagship Heritage model, now complete with a moonphase complication at the six o’clock position.
Offered in three different dial variations, the new Flagship Heritage is thoroughly vintage-styled yet modern in its approach. Longines is no stranger to retro-inspired timepieces, as they often draw from their extensive archives dating back to 1832. The gilt dial variation (L4.815.4.78.2) features a cream colored dial, gold-tone dauphine hands and dagger indices paired with a brown alligator leather strap, designed to mimic timepieces of the mid 20th century. The other two watches of this new trio are entirely more modern in their approach though functionally identical to the standout classic-inspired dial. Rounding out the release, a silver sunray dial and matching grey alligator strap (L4.815.4.72.2), and the other with a deep blue sunray dial and navy alligator strap (L4.815.4.92.2). Both references feature an identical set of silver-tone stainless-steel dauphine hands and dagger indices.

Longines’ inclusion of a moon-phase complication and date sub dial elevates the already-dressy Flagship Heritage line to new heights. Combined with a reserved 38.5 mm polished case and shortened lugs, this new offering is highly wearable and suited for formal occasions.
Adorning the closed case-back of the timepiece is an enamel-style medallion featuring the Longines Flagship and corresponding text engraving.

The Complication
The iconic moon-phase complication is rather uncomplicated in not only its appeal but the mechanical integration as well. A small decorated disk slowly rotates and shifts the moon to approximately display the phase of the moon as it cycles between a full moon, new moon, and the phases in between. The complication is among the most beautiful and romantic and is used by maisons ranging from affordable microbrands to legendary design houses alike.
Longines opted to use a semi-realistic moon and star pattern as opposed to the overly minimal or hyper-realistic offerings of many other brands. On the gilded dial reference, the moon and stars are gold-tone while the white and blue dial references use a silver-tone complication to match their indices and handset. Paired with the moon-phase complication at the six o’clock position is a date sub dial, a similarly romantic and classic watch complication.

Our Commentary
Inspired by mid-century design and classic luxury watchmaking from the likes of Patek Philippe, Longines’ approach is reminiscent of Omega’s Constellation Pie Pan configurations which are no longer available from Omega themselves, clearing the path for Longines to provide an alternative product. It’s also important to note how closely the Flagship Heritage mimics the Master Ultra Thin Moon (shown below) from legendary watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Despite the obvious and intentional comparisons to iconic references from classic luxury watchmakers, Longines’ offering is still impressive. While the design is neither inspiring or noteworthy, it is universally appealing and well made. Renowned for their beautiful finishing and robust construction, Longines is often praised for punching above their weight class, delivering a high quality product more appropriately compared to timepieces priced significantly higher than the mid-luxury price segment in which Longines exists.
At a retail price of $3,050 USD, the new Longines Flagship Heritage Moonphase is undeniably beautiful, classic, and easy to recommend.
